GPB is currently constructing a website dedicated to Georgia's World War II generation. This site will feature full-length and segmented interviews from the men and women who are legacies of our nation's "Greatest Generation," transcriptions of interviews, a searchable database, an oral history how to and field kit, an online exhibit featuring memorabilia and photos, and extensive educational resources.
Georgia Public Broadcasting's World War II Veterans Oral History Project is an initiative focused on collecting and documenting the life stories of Georgia's World War II generation through the personal accounts of men and women from Georgia, whose lives, like the lives of so many American citizens, were touched by this worldwide catastrophic event.
Over a half a century after the event, the men and women who lived through this era still have vivid memories and emotions of WWII and the events surrounding WWII. These individuals are true living history that put a face to this significant moment in American history.
Because we don't want to miss the opportunity to collect the stories of our nation's heroes and living legends from Georgia's WWII generation, GPB is currently interviewing as many individuals from this generation as possible. We want to make sure this generation's life lessons and stories are preserved and illustrated in a way that their legacy may live on for years to come.
With this project, not only will Georgia's WWII generation's life stories be preserved for future generations, but educators and students studying WWII will now be able to view in-depth interviews from the men and women from this generation. These firsthand stories and interviews will allow students to understand that this event is not just something out of a textbook, but rather that it is an event in history that touched the lives of the people of our nation and the world.
Oral history accounts of Georgia citizens who fought in WWII, Georgia citizens who supported efforts on the home front, or Georgia citizens who otherwise have firsthand knowledge of Georgia during this time period are currently being interviewed.
Interviews are conducted at GPB headquarters in Atlanta and various locations around Georgia. Please call us at 1-888-685-0304, or e-mail us at WarVets@gpb.org. We look forward to hearing from you.
